Doctors are often not aware of clinical evidence

Big surprise, I know.

A study looking into the reason for regional differences in health care spending in the US.

We find patient demand is relatively unimportant in explaining variations. Physician organizational factors (such as peer effects) matter, but the single most important factor is physician beliefs about treatment: 36 percent of end-of-life spending, and 17 percent of U.S. health care spending, are associated with physician beliefs unsupported by clinical evidence.

Physician Beliefs and Patient Preferences: A New Look at Regional Variation in Health Care Spending

  1. Not surprising in the slightest. I've heard alot of gynecologists still spread bullshit about women not getting IUDs before the age of 30 or having children which is completely unsupported by clinical evidence.

  2. My cousin has a IUD and she is 25..

  3. That's the point. I got mine when I was 21 but alot of doctors will seriously tell women that they can't have one before 30 or a child.
