That's unfortunate to say the least.

At least 4% of people who get sentenced to death are innocent
A new study finds that if everyone sentenced to death got their cases scrutinized for the next twenty years, at least 4 percent of them would likely get exonerated. And false-conviction rates are probably higher for other cases.

I wasn't really aware of the extent to which we've beaten back HIV

But since then, incredible pharmacological advances have been made in how the virus is treated and managed. Combination medications — termed ‘highly active antiretroviral therapy’ or Haart — have resulted in being able to maintain the infected person’s immune system and therefore prevent the opportunistic infections that resulted in the development of Aids and led to death. Despite working in the centre of London with high-risk groups such as sex workers and drug addicts, I haven’t seen someone die of HIV for years.

As a doctor, I’d rather have HIV than diabetes
‘There is now a deadly virus, which anyone can catch from sex with an infected person. If we’re not careful, the people who’ve died so far, will be just the…

I'm going to go ahead and start actually using Twitter

Of course, that won't be instead of G+, but in addition to.

I find myself having little things to share and say that I don't bother posting to G+ as my favorite G+ posts are more substantial, so hopefully Twitter will fill that hole.

Find me @dustin_wyatt if you care to get quick science and technology links in addition to my random quick thoughts.

I feel like people making comments about the United States' Healthcare.gov and whether or not it's finally been "fixed" are missing a bigger story.

Who cares if you can load the website and sign up for plans when the information it is giving you is flat wrong?

For example, today I've been looking over the dental plans.  While verifying plan information with various insurance companies I find that the information about the plans given by healthcare.gov is just incorrect, and not in minor ways.

For example, there are two Anthem BCBS dental plans that have identical out-of-pocket maximum figures that Anthem agents tell me are wrong by 40%.

With the recent Heartbleed security bug, it got me in the mood to go through and audit my passwords.  So, I opened up the LastPass security audit page and saw that I have 740 passwords saved.

I'm pretty sure that I imported from KeePass when I started using LastPass years ago, and I used something else before I used KeePass, so these are login credentials for probably 15 years worth of internetting, but there's no way I'm going through 740 sites and checking to make sure they're still alive, see if I still want to keep the account, etc…

We're idiots and I despair for humanity

Being better at math didn’t just fail to help partisans converge on the right answer. It actually drove them further apart. Partisans with weak math skills were 25 percentage points likelier to get the answer right when it fit their ideology. Partisans with strong math skills were 45 percentage points likelier to get the answer right when it fit their ideology. The smarter the person is, the dumber politics can make them.

How politics makes us stupid
There’s a simple theory underlying much of American politics. It sits hopefully at the base of almost every speech, every op-ed, every article, and every panel discussion. It courses through the…

Generally, I don't expect companies to react well when they are criticized about "controversial" topics.  (I hate that I had to use the word controversial there)

Nabisco had an ad about their graham crackers that showed gay couples and called it wholesome.  Of course, people being what they are, Nabisco received a lot of negative feedback about that.

They responded with this.

As chlorophyll absorbs light to convert it to energy, it emits a bit of fluorescent light.  Using existing satellites NASA figured out how to measure this florescence.

Below, you see North America during growing season…wherein it demonstrates that during this time of year it is the most productive (in terms of amount of photosynthesis) area on the planet.  _This includes being more active than the Amazon basin_.
