The poor don't eat more fast food

Well-off kids, poor kids, and all those in between tend to get about the same percentage of their calories from fast food, according to a survey of more than 5,000 people. More precisely, though, it's the poorest kids that tend to get the smallest share of their daily energy intake from Big Macs, Whoppers, Chicken McNuggets, and french fries.

Not surprising when you think about it.  Fast food is pretty expensive when you're making less than $10/hour.

A dangerous myth about who eats fast food is completely false
Rich parents might look down on fast food, but it’s actually their kids who eat it the most.

  1. This doesn't surprise me. Produce is cheaper. I've always assumed fast food consumption was a factor of time and health-consciousness.

  2. Fast food is far from the most unhealthy option. Cheap calories (that are easy to make and highly processed) are almost always the unhealthiest option.
