Visual definition of a radian

I love these animated explanations of mathematical concepts.  I so wish resources like this were available to me when I was in school.

Thanks Wikipedia.

  1. Damn, I might have been able to pass Algebra II and Geometry in HS had I had this!

  2. You don't really HAVE to understand if you memorize the rules & follow them when solving problems; this helps some people pass Algebra, because they can treat it as a kind of "game".  Some students I've tutored passed this way.

  3. +Freda Coursey Yeah, I know some people do ok that way.  However, for me, when I had problems in math it was because I was frustrated that I understood the rules without really getting why the rules were what they were.

  4. I failed Algebra II in HS but then took 3 times to pass College Algebra in College. Math is simply my Achilles Heal.

  5. People learn differently; perhaps you haven't found your Eureka! approach to math just yet.

  6. I became a sys admin and enterprise data architect where I didn't need any of that. :)

  7. Agreed Dustin. I've learned a ton of things from the internet thanks to superior teaching methods like this. Just a matter of numbers really. More teachers / educators available on a global level… someone surely thought of a better way to present it than my high school teacher / football coach.

  8. We should size pizza via "rad"

  9. It is so easy find radius bid the center of a circle too any outside mark. Radius×2=diameter diameter×3.14=circumfrence

  10. See, this is how I was taught it in school. I was taught that the arc length on the unit circle is equal to the angle of the arc in radians. It is actually much more useful at times than degree measures. Especially in calculus.

  12. Lovvve Mathematics! Thanks for the reminder!

  13. I said forget college algebra and took statistics because of this stuff

  14. I'd like a rad of pi, please make mine apple, "a la mode" 😉

  15. What software could be used for this kind of animation?

  16. The only thing I disagree with in this animation is that it seems to label that last small chunck "pi rad" whereas it should show the entire half as pi rad

  17. Me too! Lol comes in handy!#advancedmath

  18. Explanation? No.

What I see here is, as you said it yourself, a visual definition. In order to turn a definition into an explanation, it has to be placed into the context of specific application. I don't immediately see any specific context in the above. This animation is certainly correct and is definitely amusing, but it completely useless as an explanation. It will certaily help you to remember what radian is and how it is defined. But it does not really help you to use this knowledge. It might help to get through answering multiple-choice quizes in school, but it will not teach you to solve real-life geometric problems.

  19. +Nigel Alleviano Methinks you're being overly pedantic.  But of course, this is the internet so I should expect that.

It explains exactly what a radian is.  A definition is an explanation.  I never claimed that it explains how to use a radian to figure out whatever it is you have in mind.  I mean, if that's the sort of explanation you're looking for then this isn't the thing you need, but to claim it isn't an explanation is fatuous.

The typical rules you learn in lower grades about how to do geometric problems are the sort of thing you're describing.  However, by analyzing this animation, you can understand why the rules are what they are.

  20. wow until now I didn't understand that way, what I did just memorize them only but didn't understand this way. thanks for sharing.

  21. Beautifully explained…

  22. +Nigel Alleviano hi friend, can you do something for trigonometry as well…whether it is definition or explaination we are happy

  23. That just summed up 2 months of Pre-Calculus right there…

  24. wow this is very informative now I understand where Ï€=3.14 came from hhhh 🙂 thanks you very much

  25. Memorizing the formula Vs. Understanding why it is the formula

  26. good one… now I fully understand the pie thing….

  27. if i saw this in my schooling it would  more better !!! nice method !!! superb sir !!!

  28. I forgot about radians…it's all coming back haha! Oh noooo!

Anyone remember the area–pi r squared? Like to see an animation for that. Maybe we could get a math animation thread going!

  29. Very nice – its a tool to understand relationships – not inter-personal , but how we understand the physical world.  very understandable

  30. It's national math day today! 😛

  31. Could 2Ï€ rad also be known as…totally….rad? #mathhumor #youvebeenalovelyaudience
