Google Reader is going bye-bye

For me, the internet is Google Reader.  This is quite unfortunate.

A second spring of cleaning

  1. And of course, all the alternatives I've tried so far are getting hammered with traffic and are thus unusable.

  2. Same thing for me. This is fairly upsetting.

  3. Yep, this sucks a lot. I guess most people either like/circle their article sources on social networks or hit the sites directly. Both seem really unappealing and I use Reader a ton.

  4. Have you tried Feedly? This is from their website:

"Google announced today that they will be shutting down Google Reader. This is something we have been expecting for some time: We have been working on a project called Normandy which is a feedly clone of the Google Reader API – running on Google App Engine. When Google Reader shuts down, feedly will seamlessly transition to the Normandie back end. So if you are a Google Reader user and using feedly, you are covered: the transition will be seamless."

  5. I'm trying to try it.  But it's getting hammered, so I haven't been able to.

  6. Oh man, Feedly's site is getting destroyed by traffic. I guess we are a small but die hard base of users. I would seriously pay to continue using Reader (plus maybe Google would spend some time actually improving the product).

  7. I'm trying to read the trending Reader topic hits but the page is hemorrhaging posts so fast I can't keep up.

  8. Damn, now I need a new feed reader, or build one I guess. I’ve used google reader since firefox live bookmarks became unfeasible due to the number of feeds I had.

  9. @scutterman: Yep, ’tis a shame. I also had the thought of building one myself, but there’s so many projects I’d like to build myself and not enough time…

  10. I've been trying out Feedly today.  You can configure it to look and behave quite like Reader, so that's good.

  11. I’ve been trying out Feedly today too. The web client is great but the Android app is near unusable, far too much flash and not enough content. I just want a list of my feeds that I can organise by oldest, but it keeps taking up unnecessary space by adding in thumbnails and by making the first item massive. I also cannot get the “Mark Unread” to work. I hope it gets better soon.
