Yes, there's reason to make electricity to "only" convert it to heat. Â You need to store electricity in some manner because peak electricity generation doesn't coincide with peak electricity usage.
Also, I literally don't believe you that a simple water based solar heater will be a lot cheaper.
And it seems you are right. Apparently my knowledge is out of date. It used to be that solar thermal was 1/4 price of solar ev. But it is probably no longer so:
