Can someone explain to me how G+ notifications work?

I'll get a notification about a post by people I don't have in a circle, and they haven't +mentioned me in the post, and the post says it is "Shared publicly".  These are usually spammy posts like this one:

Why do I get notifications for these?  By "notification" I mean I get the red indicator by the bell at the top of Google sites, and a notification via G+ on my phone.

  1. In your G+ settings, there is a check box for certain notifications…you should check out your Google *and * G+ settings carefully.

  2. You are getting a notification because they are sharing both to Public and to a circle with you in it. In your notification settings, you can change the Who Can Notify You setting from Public to Your Circles or specific circles.

  3. Ahh, that makes sense I guess.  I guess the spot on a post where it says "Shared publicly" doesn't have a state to show "they shared this post publicly and with certain circles".

  4. So, I take it if someone in my extended circles shares to their extended circles as well as public, I get notified IF I allow notifications from people in my extended circles.

    Cheeky bastards.
