(Copy pasted from a post I made on an Android forum I participate on)
So, last night I was helping my wife set up her new Moto X (which she's had sitting in its box for a week. Real phone nerds, us.)
The setup experience was not what I would call smooth. I had to swear up and down that if she got a new phone all her old apps would be on there. I knew that Google would restore apps when she signed in so we were all good.
She boots up the phone, gets to the part where she enters her password (Motorola already had her account on there as part of Motomaker), and up pops a dialog telling her about an update to the phone. She tells it to remind her later. After she clicks "OK" or whatever on that dialog it dumps her to the home screen with no account set up, and when I talked her through the process of adding her account in settings, of course it doesn't restore all her old apps.
Not a great experience for a phone novice and she probably would have just given up since she doesn't want to spend a lot of time messing with the thing.
Kinda disappointing, +Motorola Mobility.

This could actually be due to the fact that her last phone wasn't backed up. It's not an automated process. On older phones you had to manually check the backup option and on newer phones you are prompted to choose to make that phone the backup device.
No, it's backed up.
I will have to take your word for it.
Yes, that's kind of how talking on the internet works.
Ok dude. have fun. You are a great conversationalist.
"I will have to take your word for it."
A great conversationalist indeed!
Android is making you bitter. Do you remember when you used to enjoy them, before talking with its users and constantly dealing with its shortcomings?
+Dustin Wyatt I'm slightly confused. You say that Motorola already had her account on there. You then go on to say that it dumped her to the homescreen with no account setup? Either way, do a factory reset and set it up from scratch.
I've gone back to factory settings a few times and while the apps and settings were there, it did take 10 minutes or so for them to start to trickle back into the phone. Â It took so long to start that I figured it wasn't going to happen so I had already started to fix things by hand.
+william reynolds The way motomaker works is that after you receive the device your email address is pre-filled on the welcome wizard…you just have to input your password to continue the setup.
Well, that's the way it's supposed to work at least.
Anyway, I know how to solve the problem, the point is that it's not a very smooth system.
+Dustin Wyatt we'll, that sucks. As you said, easy fix if you know what you're doing. My wife would have been annoyed if that happened to her.
You'd think with the frequency at which android users get new devices and do factory resets they would have finally have this part nailed by now.
