Photographer Charles Fréger set out to capture images from across Europe of many types of pre-Christian costumes (and some pre-Christian costumes that were co-opted by Christianity).

The photos are some fairly striking ethnography.

Here is an example from Bulgaria where men cover themselves with goatskins to impersonate the Kukeri, who both embody and chase away evil spirits. In the past they’d brush against women to bestow fertility.

A lot more pictures here: http://www.contriving.net/link/d8

Unfortunately, those pictures don't have any sort of captions.

NatGeo has a lesser number, but with captions, here: http://www.contriving.net/link/d9
